Hot Filling Limitations for PET Cans

Generally, NO. Standard PET plastic has a heat distortion temperature of around 60°C to 65°C (140°F - 150°F). If you pour boiling liquid (90°C+) into a standard PET can, it will shrink, deform, and melt instantly.

The Solution: You must cool your beverage down to at least room temperature (or below 50°C) before filling. This packaging is designed for Cold Brew, Iced Tea, Sodas, and Ambient Temperature Juices.

Shelf Life Comparison: PET vs. Glass

PET technology is advanced, but plastic is naturally slightly permeable compared to glass or metal.

  • Carbonated Drinks: Expected shelf life of 3 to 6 months before carbonation levels start to drop.
  • Non-Carbonated Drinks: With proper sealing and nitrogen flushing, shelf life can extend to 6 to 12 months.
Storage Tip: Keeping the cans in a cool, dark environment (refrigerated is best) significantly extends the quality and shelf life.

Label Design and Templates

Calculating the label size for our cylindrical cans is straightforward (Circumference = Diameter × π), but you must account for the overlap.

  • 330ml Can: Label width approx. 200mm-210mm; height approx. 110mm.
  • 500ml Can: Similar width; taller height around 160mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum temperature for PET cans?
The standard heat distortion temperature for PET is between 60°C and 65°C. For safety and structural integrity, we recommend filling below 50°C.
Can I use these cans for hot coffee or boiling tea?
No, standard clear PET cans will deform and melt instantly if filled with boiling liquid. They are exclusively designed for cold or ambient temperature applications.
How long will carbonated drinks stay fizzy in PET cans?
You can expect a quality shelf life of 3 to 6 months. While still safe to consume after this period, the carbonation levels may start to decrease.
How can I extend the shelf life of non-carbonated drinks?
Using nitrogen flushing during the sealing process and storing the cans in a cool, refrigerated environment can extend the shelf life to 6-12 months.
What are the recommended label dimensions for 330ml and 500ml cans?
For 330ml cans, use a width of 200-210mm and height of 110mm. For 500ml cans, use a similar width with a height of approximately 160mm.
Should I test my label design before a full production run?
Yes, we highly recommend printing your design on paper and wrapping it around a sample can to verify the visual fit and overlap before ordering professional stickers.
